Why Are Prices Rising?
The ongoing fuel price hike is primarily driven by Brent crude crossing $105 per barrel, fuelled by tensions in West Asia and disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz — a critical shipping route through which around 20% of the world’s oil supply passes. As petrol prices in India continue to rise, the current petrol price in India is being heavily impacted by global crude oil trends. Since India imports nearly 85% of its crude oil and pays for it in US dollars, a weaker rupee has compounded the cost further, leading to another increase in Indian petrol prices today.
OMCs — Indian Oil, BPCL, and HPCL — had reportedly been absorbing losses of ₹1,600–1,700 crore per day before initiating the current round of hikes that began after May 15. Indian petrol prices have increased sharply over the past few days, especially in metro cities. Petrol price in New Delhi has now crossed ₹102 per litre, while prices in Delhi have risen by approximately ₹5 per litre over the past ten days.
