For most of this year, the battle for the top spot has been between the Tata Punch, Maruti Dzire, and Wagon R. In August, the Maruti Baleno was in ninth place; then, in September, it jumped straight to the number one position.

But it wasn’t just about the Baleno. Tata’s Nexon and Punch performed at similar levels. Hatchbacks made a strong comeback, while sales for some other big names were lower compared to a year ago.

How Each Car Performed :-

1. Maruti Suzuki Baleno: 25,392 units

The Baleno was the big headline of the month. It sold 25,392 units in September 2026, compared with 13,173 in September 2025(last year), almost double. In August, it had sold 15,746 units and was ninth on the list, so this was a huge jump in just one month.

The Baleno has always been a favourite for buyers who want a spacious, practical hatchback that’s easy to live with. September proved it’s still one of India’s most-loved cars.

2. Tata Nexon: 20,456 units

The Tata Nexon held on to second place, but only just. The Nexon and Nexon EV together sold 20,456 units, down 9% from September 2025, finishing just 123 units ahead of the Punch.

The yearly drop needs some context. September 2025 was a record month for Nexon, because new GST rates came into effect on 22 September 2025, cutting car prices and pushing sales up sharply. So the comparison base was unusually high.

3. Tata Punch: 20,333 units

After topping the chart in August, the Punch slipped to third, but it still had a strong month. The Punch and Punch EV together sold 20,333 units, up 28% from a year earlier.

4. Maruti Suzuki Fronx: 19,282 units

The Fronx keeps getting stronger, both in India and abroad. It finished fourth with 19,282 units, compared with 13,767 a year ago, a rise of about 40%. It’s also India’s most exported car, so it’s a true global success story.

5. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R: 18,835 units

The Wagon R proves that simple, practical cars never go out of style. It sold 18,835 units, up 22% from September 2025. Its tall-boy design, easy driving and low running costs keep it a favourite with families and first-time buyers.

6. Maruti Suzuki Dzire: 17,754 units

The Dzire was the only sedan in the top 10, with 17,754 units, though that was down 11% from 20,038 a year earlier. Like the Nexon, it’s being compared with a very strong September 2025, when it crossed 20,000 units after the GST price cuts.

7. Hyundai Creta: 17,657 units

The Creta was Hyundai’s only car in the top 10. Together with the Creta Electric, it sold 17,657 units, a 6% drop from 18,861 last year. Even so, it improved from August, when it sold 16,288 units, and it remains India’s best-selling midsize SUV for the year so far.

8. Maruti Suzuki Swift: 17,399 units

The Swift sold 17,399 units, up 12% from 15,547 a year earlier. It was one of three Maruti hatchbacks in the top 10, alongside the Baleno and Wagon R.

9. Mahindra Scorpio: 17,313 units

The Scorpio continues to be Mahindra’s biggest seller. The Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic together recorded 17,313 units, down 6% from 18,372 a year earlier. That’s still up from 15,576 units in August, so Mahindra’s flagship had a better month than the yearly number suggests.

10. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga: 16,911 units

The Ertiga rounded off the list with one of the strongest growth rates of the month. It sold 16,911 units, up 40% from 12,115 in September 2025. It remains India’s go-to choice for families who need seven seats at a sensible cost.

Maruti Suzuki stayed far ahead, as always. The real fight was for second place: Tata Motors beat Mahindra by just 227 units. Kia had the best month among the big brands, and was the only carmaker to grow both month-on-month and year-on-year.

Wholesales vs Registrations: Why Numbers Can Look Different

You may see slightly different September numbers on other websites. That’s because car sales are counted in two ways:

  1. Wholesales (dispatches): cars sent from factories to dealers. Our top 10 list uses these figures.
  2. Registrations (Vahan data): cars actually bought and registered by customers.

In September 2026, registrations told an even stronger story. A total of 4,20,359 cars were registered, up 31.8% from September 2025. So buyers were very active, even though factory dispatches were fairly flat at around 4 lakh units.

5 Key Takeaways From September 2026

  1. Hatchbacks are back. Three hatchbacks (Baleno, Wagon R and Swift) made the top 10, and the Baleno took the crown. Small cars still matter a lot in India.
  2. SUVs still rule the list. Five of the top 10 cars were SUVs: the Nexon, Punch, Fronx, Creta and Scorpio.
  3. Maruti Suzuki dominates. Six of the top 10 cars came from Maruti, across hatchbacks, SUVs, sedans and MPVs.
  4. Last year’s GST effect matters. The Nexon, Dzire, Creta and Scorpio all fell year-on-year, but September 2025 was boosted by GST price cuts, so these drops aren’t a sign of weak demand.
  5. The top 10 is getting tighter. Only about 3,500 units separated the third-placed Punch from the tenth-placed Ertiga. Any of these cars could jump up the list next month.

What These Numbers Mean for Car Owners

When a car sells in big numbers, it’s usually good news for owners in the long run. Popular models have more mechanics who know them well, better resale value, and easier availability of spare parts.

Many of these cars, like the Baleno, Fronx, Swift and Dzire, are also exported from India to markets in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. That means demand for their genuine spare parts stays strong both in India and abroad.

At Assurer, we supply genuine spare parts for Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Mahindra and other leading brands to workshops, distributors and importers in India and around the world. If you need parts for any of the cars on this list, send your car model or part number on WhatsApp at +91 74289 08900, and our team will help you find the right one.
